Dr. Bingyun Sun Receives CFI's John R. Evans Leaders Fund

April 29, 2014

Dr. Bingyun Sun, a chemistry assistant professor, has been awarded a John R. Evans Leaders Fund from the Canadian Foundation of Innovation (CFI) for the amount of $300,000.

This award, which is to be matched by B.C. Knowledge Development Fund (BCKDF) and topped up by a third part for a total amount of $750,000, will allow Dr. Sun to acquire a cutting-edge liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry (LC-MS) system with high accuracy, high resolution and high throughput to support the research interests of her laboratory, which focus on the developing novel proteomics methodologies to study cell surface proteins. These proteins are critically important for almost all major cellular processes and functions, and they have been recognized as major drug targets and main sources for biomarkers of disease diagnosis and prognosis. Their extremely low abundance and high structural complexity have rendered these proteins the most challenging species to study.

This CFI award will enable Dr. Sun’s group to develop a diverse sensitive proteomics strategies to tackle the structure and functions of these proteins using systematic approaches, and to strengthen the proteomics research in the Chemistry and other departments at SFU.
