NSERC Welcomes Dr. B. Mario Pinto as New President

NSERC is pleased to inform that Dr. B. Mario Pinto has been appointed as its new President, effective fall 2014.

Dr. Pinto brings a strong combination of research accomplishment and administrative experience to our Council.

"Dr. Pinto's unique international perspective and partnership track record will be tremendous assets as NSERC evolves and grows in an increasingly competitive, globalized research environment," said James Edwards, Vice-President and Chair of NSERC Council. "On the innovation side, Dr. Pinto has been involved with high-tech start-ups and other local businesses to build partnerships that commercialize Canada's innovation strengths."

"At the same time, his work as Vice-President, Research at Simon Fraser University has been characterized by a keen community focus," noted Janet Walden, NSERC's Chief Operating Officer. "He has strongly encouraged academics to work closely with community members to define multidisciplinary research projects that both advance the frontiers of knowledge and provide benefits to society and the economy."

Dr. Pinto knows NSERC well through his many contributions to the Council's committees, including grant selection committees and the Committee on Research Partnerships.
