Long before our technology was sufficiently sophisticated as to give us revealing information about brain processes, thinkers were pondering the nature of consciousness.  Before the development of effective brain imaging techniques, our best tools in the study of consciousness were introspection and philosophy- the examination of our own conscious experiences.  The history of the philosophy of consciousness is extremely rich, and closely related to such philosophical topics as time, personal identity, and social and environmental justice.  The following sections of the website are designed to familiarize readers with issues and trends in the philosophy of consciousness that are relevant to the topics of the President's Dream Colloquium.
