Paid Work Opportunities

SFU offers work opportunities on campus, contingent on availability, qualifications, seniority, and applicant success.  These opportunities are open to all students, regardless of country of origin.

Teaching Assistanceships: Masters students can apply to work as teaching assistants for undergraduate courses.  TA-ships pay approximately CD$5000 per semester (depending on the course load) and occupy approximately 10 hours per week.  The work includes leading tutorial discussions and grading papers.  See the faculty's job listings for further details.

Work Study: GCMA students can apply for SFU’s Work Study program, which matches successful applicants with faculty members to support research and research administration tasks.  Visit Work Study for further details.  Students can complete a Work Study as their Field Placement in the program.

Scholarships, Bursaries and Awards

Program applicants and current program students are eligible for several exclusive scholarships, listed below.  Additional scholarlship opportunities are listed on SFU's Financial Aid website.

Global Communication Entrance Scholarships: The Global Communication Entrance Scholarship is offered to exceptional applicants. All Canadian and International applicants are considered for this award.

CUC  Entrance  Scholarships: CUC Entrance Scholarships are available for SFU-recruited students who demonstrate outstanding performance during their year at SFU. The CUC will apply a tuition waiver to the winners of the CUC Entrance Scholarship.

The Orient Star Media Graduate Scholarship in Global Communication: The purpose of this award is to recognize and provide financial support to graduate students enrolled full-time in the Global Communication M.A. Double Degree Program.

Vivienne Taylor Bursary: During her time as an Undergraduate student at SFU, Vivienne received bursary funding, which enabled her to finish her degree. This life-changing experience led her and her husband to establish The Vivienne Taylor School of Communication Bursary Fund. This generous gift is awarded in the form of a bursary to a graduate student in the Global Communication M.A. Double Degree Program.

China Scholarship Council  Scholarships: The China Scholarship Council provides multiple scholarship opportunities for students studying in China. 

Program Fees

While at Simon Fraser University (SFU), students pay specialty program tuition fees to SFU at the beginning of each semester. For Year 2, students pay CUC its full annual tuition amount in one installment. The SFU’s specialty program tuition fee is approximately $4,269.16 per term in the 2018/2019 academic year. Applicants are advised to check the confirmed rate posted by the university at the time of application.

Year 1 Program Fees at SFU

For Year One at SFU, all students pay specialty program tuition and other required fees only to SFU. Please refer to the official current posted rates for program fees.

Please note that students are responsible for paying tuition each semester at SFU. Students recruited by SFU, whether domestic or international, pay the same specialty tuition for this program.

Other Mandatory Fees

For Year One at SFU, all students are required to pay the following mandatory fees:

  1. Ancillary Fees - Graduate Student Activity, Universal Transit Pass, Student Services and Recreation-Athletics, and Special Fees. 
  2. Medical Insurance - provides students with medical coverage (required unless the student provides SFU with proof of acceptable equivalent coverage). 

All students are responsible for paying their own travel costs and any other costs related to the program, such as personal and living expenses, books, and school supplies.

Fees, Costs,  and  Housing

Year 2 Program Fees at CUC

For Year Two at CUC, students recruited by SFU shall pay program tuition and other required fees to CUC. The estimated tuition fee at CUC is 45,000 Yuan (approximately $9,500 CAD)

All students are responsible for paying their own travel costs and any other costs related to the program, such as personal and living expenses, books, and school supplies.
