Responsible social media monitoring

February 04, 2019

Are we thinking critically about the lens through which we tell our stories? Are we sharing content responsibly on social media? Are we thoughtfully engaging with our community?

At January’s communicators meeting, CJ Rowe, director of SFU's Sexual Violence Support and Prevention Office (SVSPO), spoke about rape culture hierarchy and offered some insights and tips for sharing social media posts that don’t blame the victim.

Among Rowe’s recommendations: If you’re not sure how to respond to a hateful post, take a screenshot and reach out to the SVSPO for help on what a response could look like.

Rowe also offered up several tools for SFU communicators to help elevate the conversation:

1)    Using the right words: Media reporting on sexual violence in Canada

2)    Language checklist when reporting on sexual assault
