Welcome new communicators – Kayla, Tiffany and Ian

Tiffany Akins

From a day in Disneyland with disadvantaged kids, to kidnappings, Tiffany Akins covered a variety of stories as a television news videographer (reporter and camera) in Edmonton.

She went to the ‘dark side’ and worked in multiple communications roles within the Government of B.C. For the last 12 years, she has been at Vancouver Coastal Health and has been the lead on all things public health (think measles on a plane), including the overdose file. She also handled media relations and social media duties. She has earned certificates in radio and television arts, and public relations.

Tiffany, who joins SFU Communications and Marketing as the new director of media relations and public affairs, has a dog, Milka, and volunteers at a farm sanctuary, Please connect with her at

Ian Young

Ian Young comes to SFU from Vancouver Coastal Health (VCH,) where he was previously managed the digital communications team, overseeing strategy for the organization’s internal and external digital channels. Ian joins SFU Communications and Marketing as the new assistant director of digital engagement.

Before his time at VCH, Ian worked in various communications and marketing roles within the real estate, commercial interior design, and manufacturing industries. Ian has a bachelor’s degree in management from UBC (please don’t hold it against him). Outside of work, you may find him snowboarding local mountains, pursuing his interest in photography, or stuffing his face (his words) with all the great food Vancouver has to offer.

Kayla Schultz

Kayla Schultz is the new communications and marketing officer for SFU’s Office of the Vice-President, Research. She completed her undergraduate degree in English literature at SFU and has a broadcast and online journalism diploma from BCIT.

As an SFU alumnus, Kayla most recently worked with a public relations and digital marketing agency where she managed social media, marketing and communications for several brands and companies. She has more than three years of communications and digital marketing experience in past roles and has a deep understanding of brand awareness, digital content creation and strategy, and social media.
