Overview

The Computing Science Instructional Labs (CSIL) currently have the following hardware setup in multiple campuses and study areas. Please report issues to helpdesk if you need further assistance.


Latest updates:

The 31 workstations in ASB 9700 are now all upgraded to Dell Optiplex 7071s.  Each has 1 Geforce RTX 2080 GPU. (2020.05)

The 15 workstations in ASB 9820 are now all upgraded to Dell Optiplex 7071s.  Each has 1 Geforce RTX 2080 GPU. (2020.05)

New room for PMP students: BLU 9402, we have 36 Dell Precision workstations. Each has 1 Geforce RTX 2080 GPU. (2019.09)

The workstations in ASB 9838 North are now all upgraded to Dell Optiplex 7060s. (2019.05)

Burnaby Campus

CSIL@Burnay are located in the Applied Science Building (ASB) and Blusson Hall (BLU), and consist of the following Study Areas:

In ASB 9700 (the room is under renovation, the workstations are available for remote access), we have:

  • 31 Dell Optpliex 7071 Workstations (their names: asb9700-g##, h##, i## and j##)

About special GPUs in the CSIL@Burnaby lab

For the new workstations in ASB 9700 and ASB 9820 (total: 46), each has 1 discrete video card (NVidia Geforce RTX 2080) installed. These cards have the CUDA Compute Capability of 7.5. The CUDA development tools are configured under Ubuntu on these systems. They have the names like:

asb9700-g##, asb9700-h##, asb9700-i##, asb9700-j##

asb9820-e##, asb9820-f##, asb9820-g##, asb9820-h##

For the front two rows of workstations in ASB 9840 (total: 16), each has 1 discrete video card (NVidia Geforce GTX 1050 Ti, from ZOTAC). These cards have the CUDA Compute Capability of 6.1. The CUDA development tools are configured under Ubuntu on these systems. These workstations have the names like:

asb9840-a##, asb9840-b##

People taking paralle computing or graphics related courses have priority to use these systems.

About Projectors in the lab

There is a mounted projector for each study area; each is accompanied by a remote, a motorized screen and a special HDMI cable, a special VGA cable. You may locate the projector's connector near these workstations:

  • asb9700-g05
  • asb9804-a05
  • asb9838n-a07 (displays to two projectors)
  • asb9820-e01
  • asb9840-a05

Please remember, after your presentation is finished:

Turn off the projector to save the lamp and electricity.
Put the screen back to the top.
Make sure the switch (for screen motors) is on "off" (not up, not down).
detach the HDMI/VGA cable from the computer.

About powerbars in the lab

The powerbars are provided for personal computing devices only. Plugging in any other devices is prohibited.

Please do not unplug any device already plugged into the powerbar - others may be using the device.

Please remember to unplug & bag your own device before you leave.

Safety warning: trip hazard -  you may only use the powerbar on the same row you sit on; otherwise, the cords may cause people stumble.

About DisplayPort cables and mini DisplayPort cables in the lab

All DisplayPort cables and mini DisplayPort cables are for the School's equipment use only.

Warning: disconnecting any DisplayPort cable or mini DisplayPort cable from the CSIL workstations or LCDs for personal use is prohibited.

The CSIL access will be revoked if you use any of these cables for your personal device.

About extra HDMI/VGA cables in the lab

The extra HDMI/VGA cables are provided for people to hook up our LCD panels to their personal laptops.

If you change the display settings of the monitor to use the extra HDMI/VGA connection as the input source, please reset to proper one when you leave - this means you should see the proper CSIL  login screen on the LCD panel.

Warning: disconnecting any cable from the CSIL workstations for personal use is prohibited.

About the sound system

A sound system had been installed in ASB9838 North in year 2013.

You may book the microphone from CS General office ASB 9971.

Since the sound system covers the whole area of ASB 9838 North, an exclusive booking of this study area is required.

Please turn the amplifier volume knob to off position after using this system.

Special notes on programming

Operating System (O/S) level programming (e.g. with fork() calls) must be done on Linux workstations in CSIL. No other hosts should be used on SFU network, no exceptions.
