Greetings Faculty and Staff of the School of Computing Science,

I am very pleased to be able to announce the following winners of the Computing Science Student Society Awards for community involvement and excellence in undergraduate teaching:

Community Involvement:

Brad Bart

Brad has been a tremendously good sport in putting up with he demands his students place on him outside of the classroom. In addition to his efforts in coaching the ACM ICPC team, Brad has aggressively ensured his own involvement in student life. Highlights from the last year include producing four, custom made and quite wittily so, T- shirts to don during his tenure in the CSSS Faculty Dunk Tank at last Summer's end of semester social and inserting himself in as a dealer in our recurring ASB Atrium Casino. Finally, Brad consistently goes the extra mile to do things like get to know his students, even in 100 person+ classes and is always willing to keep in touch.

Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching:

Greg Mori and Toby Donaldson (tie)

Greg Mori's offerings of CMPT 310 have gained a significant reputation amongst students. His lectures are consistently of the highest calibre both in preparation and presentation and his assignments prove to be quite challenging and most engaging. Greg is also always available for assistance if it is needed, and is immediately prepared to answer nearly any questions his students may pose, and here I speak from personal experience.

Toby Donaldson has earned a similar reputation a the Surrey Campus.

Toby has managed the unenviable task of making introductory core computing courses interesting to an audience that is often more interested in pursuing art and design. His accomplishments are also impressive enough to split the vote of a body that has only ever worked with him through school committees and never in fact taken one of his classes.

Congratulations to all of these winners!

These awards are made by vote of the CSSS executive on nomination by the membership (that is, the Computing Science student body). There were many other very deserving nominees, but we are certain that they will get the recognition they deserve in the future, as these awards will recur yearly. Please join us in celebrating the accomplishments of your colleagues.

Finally, I'd also like to thank Greg Baker, last year's community involvement award winner, for his incessant efforts to create community in this school and his idea for the creation of the undergraduate teaching award.

Sincerely,

Noah
