Hazardous Waste Management

The Laboratory Waste Handling Poster has been updated in October 2018. It offers a quick visual guide to sorting, handling and disposing of laboratory waste streams.

Simon Fraser University must abide by federal, provincial and local regulations with respect to hazardous waste management. These regulations exist to protect human health, the environment, as well as SFU building, drain and sewer infrastructure.

Some implications of these laws are:

  • Disposal of hazardous materials down the drain is prohibited.
  • All hazardous materials designated for disposal must be properly labeled and packaged in suitable containers.
  • Every person that may use, handle or dispose of wastes, must be informed of the proper methods of disposal and has the responsibility to comply with the law.

General information for waste disposal is available through the resources below:

SFU Solid Waste Disposal Guidelines

For specific waste streams, refer to the list at right for more information.

How to submit a request for hazardous waste pickup

The online request system for laboratory hazardous waste pickup is managed by EHRS. The system will prompt users to enter key information about the waste and about their location. Users can submit a single or a recurring (weekly) request. EHRS can then arrange for SFU's qualified Hazardous Waste Contractor to conduct safe handling, removal and disposal.
