Three World Fashion Centres (55+)

For 300 years Paris has inspired fashionable women around the world. It is the home of style, taste and haute couture dressmaking of the highest quality. We will explore this epicentre of elegance along with two other fashion capitals.

Shanghai, Paris of the East, was one of the few cities in 19th-century China with a conspicuous international community. The Japanese, British, Americans, Portuguese and French all had a presence there, and the French brought with them Western fashion and couture sewing. Vancouver, Paris of the West (western Canada, that is), had a small population when it was incorporated in 1886, but the coming of the railroad in 1887 and the development of shipping and industry created rapid growth. With growth came financial success which, as we’ll see, promoted an interest in luxury and fine fashion.
