Introduction to Interpretation and Translation Workshop Series

Take the first steps towards a career in interpretation and translation. In this series of four remotely delivered workshops, gain an overview of the interpretation and translation profession and the knowledge and skill sets required of interpreters and translators. You will be coached on how to navigate certification and accreditation, as well as how to maintain clientele. You will also learn about programs and resources that can help you achieve your goals.

Workshop 1 — Friday, November 6
Overview of the Interpretation and Translation Industry

This workshop will outline the various aspects of the interpretation and translation profession, from what the work entails and different modes of interpretation and translation, to how to navigate training, certification and the job market.

Workshop 2 — Friday, November 13
Peek into an Interpreter and Translator’s Toolbox 

Delve into the skill sets and competencies required of interpreters and translators, and pick up tools and resources to help you along the way.

Workshop 3 — Friday, November 20
Foray into Interpretation and Translation Training

This workshop will guide you through a preliminary skills training process. Try your hand at interpreting and work your way through some real-life scenarios.

Workshop 4 — Friday, November 27
Roadmap to an Interpretation and Translation Career

Uncover the secrets of a successful career in interpretation and translation. You will also explore the next steps in your own career and professional development.

Workshop facilitator: Rose Jen

Having lived in Asia, South Africa and North America, Rose Jen comes from a diverse and multicultural background. She is passionate about helping people from different parts of the world communicate with one another. Rose is a certified interpreter with the Canadian Translators, Terminologists and Interpreters Council (CTTIC) and the Society of Translators and Interpreters of British Columbia (STIBC). She is also a certified medical interpreter and an accomplished trainer in the field. A dynamic presence in the classroom, Rose brings her students into a medical interpreter's realm and its linguistic, cultural and ethical challenges.

Location: Workshops will be delivered remotely in an online-supported learning environment.

Workshop fees: $200 for 4 two-hour workshops, or $60 per individual workshop
