Mellissa Ruryk

Equipped with a bachelor's degree in Secondary Education from UBC (English and art majors), writing to explain and train has been part of every position Mellissa Ruryk has held. Mellissa is a senior technical communicator with experience writing for technology, financial, oil and gas, and engineering clients. She is the past president of the Canada West Coast chapter of the Society for Technical Communication (STC) and past co-manager of STC’s Instructional Design and Learning special interest group. She runs her own freelance technical communication business and earned her Foundation Certification in Technical Communication in the spring of 2019.

Mellissa has maintained a strong interest in plain language principles, editing and instructional design in our connected and on-demand world. Mellissa finds the logical and intuitive sides of her brain engaged as she uses her knowledge of plain language principles and design to write, edit, instruct and produce highly usable documentation in the form of user guides, online help, quick references, policy and procedure manuals, proposals and reports. Her toolbox includes Microsoft Word, Madcap Flare and Atlassian Confluence, mastered over a career that includes employment with larger and smaller companies, and her favourite—short-term freelancing.
