Simon Fraser University’s Interpretation and Translation Diploma (Mandarin Chinese/English) is an eight-month, full-time professional training program that focuses on practical interpretation and translation courses, on-location practice sessions, and English-language upgrading. Throughout the program, we emphasize cross-cultural analysis and understanding.

The program is ideal for a variety of people:

  • Bilinguals who would like to begin careers in Mandarin Chinese/English interpretation and/or translation
  • Professional Mandarin Chinese/English interpreters and/or translators who would like to sharpen their skills and/or pursue certification
  • Mandarin Chinese/English speakers who work or would like to work in international development, international business, or another global industry that requires cultural and linguistic fluency
  • Anyone with an academic interest in English, Mandarin Chinese and cross-cultural communication

We believe in learning by doing. We offer real-world interpretation training opportunities in the form of weekly interpreting field training to industries throughout Vancouver and beyond. 

During these trips, you’ll do the following:

  • Build specialized vocabulary through preparation, research and experience
  • Sharpen your interpretation and translation skills by interpreting for a host speaker
  • Develop your understanding of North American society
  • Become familiar with a variety of vocal patterns and accents
  • Begin to build a professional network

Study with certified interpretation and translation practitioners

Our instructors are all certified interpreters and translators who will help you enhance your linguistic and communication skills as well as your cultural fluency. They’ll also ensure that you get hands-on interpretation and translation practice. You’ll graduate with the fundamental knowledge, skills and experience you need to become a consecutive interpreter and/or translator.
