Format Part-time online
(Vancouver courses return fall 2022)
Schedule Courses are four days long and run from Thursday to Saturday, usually once a month.
Duration We offer this program from September to April.  It's designed to be completed within eight months, but you have up to three years to finish. You may also register for most courses individually when space is available.
Courses There are five required courses and a practicum/coaching/integration course.
Learning materials All required readings will either be provided or will be available through the SFU Library. 
Tuition Tuition is based on individual course fees.

Application deadline We accept qualified students on a first-come, first-served basis, and will continue to accept applications if space permits. Since the program can fill quickly, we recommend applying and registering for your courses early to secure your seat.

Learning environment

Courses feature a wide variety of instructional techniques, including group exercises, case studies, discussions and field trips. You’ll work through the program with a cohort—a group of fellow change agents—with whom you can share experience, ideas and expertise.

Coursework: What to expect

This certificate is university-level. You’ll complete advance readings and in-class exercises for each of the courses. You’ll also complete practical assignments for each course, as well as a paper and a poster presentation for your practicum.

Hardware and software requirements

You will need a computer that is connected to the internet so that you can access Canvas, our online course management system. You can check if your browser is compatible with Canvas by accessing Canvas guides here. We recommend you use Google Chrome or Firefox.

Also, you will need to enable your computer’s audio and microphone to participate in live sessions offered through Zoom Meetings.

Graduation requirements

To receive the Social Innovation Certificate, you must successfully complete all courses and your practicum project within a three-year period.
