Contest Deadline

Friday November 24, 2017 at 11:59pm (PST)

Prizes

1 of 2 $50 Amazon gift cards

Contest submissions will be evaluated using the following criteria:

1. Subject - Photos should be focused on a location, or the student in a specific location. Photos where the student is in the photo, or is performing an activity in the photo will be given preference.

2. Focus - Photos should be sharp where needed. The main compositional piece of the photo is in focus.

3. Composition & Lighting - Composition is the arrangement of visual elements in a work of art in such a way that is pleasing to the eye.  A good execution of lighting produces results with soft, diffused illumination, without multiple shadows, with accurate color, and without harsh contrast that washes out or excessively darkens details in the image.

4. Creativity - A creative image is one that leaves an impact on the viewer. Does the image capture a rare event? Is there a dynamic action taking place? Is the photo taken at an exceptional location?

5. An Engaging Story - A good caption has sufficient detail, fits with what is presented in the photograph, and makes a reader intrigued.

Your picture can be of your favourite coffee shop, beach, garden, etc...

Jeonju, South Korea

Thousands and thousands and thousands of giant waterlilies 🌉 It's so beautiful to see Jeonju, which has been my home town for these 6 months here in Korea, in all its blooming glory. From bleak dried reeds in the winter, to spring's cherry blossoms, to this summer scene, it's a cheesy metaphor for my growing love for this city 💗

At the point this was taken, I was starting to feel the 3 layers of my black hanbok skirt on a 27° day 😥 📷

@sfu_coop #myspotintheworld This was taken at the 한옥마을 (Hanok village) in the city I was living, Jeonju! I loved spending my weekends and evenings strolling the traditional streets and eating traditional Korean foods. Many people rent Hanbok dresses to wear around the village, as I did when this was taken!

My favorite spot - The one and only bridge on the 19th floor of Manulife Financial Centre in HongKong where PwC resides. People come to have coffe and have small meetings. The view is gorgeous, I loved to spend my chill time every friday after work to see the cruise ships come and go.

Lost is a lovely place to find yourself.

@sfu_coop #myplaceintheworld Hong Kong is known as a bustling city that never sleeps but to me it is also home and somewhere I can let my mind wander. Places such as this old swimming pier is where you can still hear the rumble of the waves and distant fog horns without the noise and hustle from traffic.

#myspotintheworld is here 🇭🇰
To many, this spot is an Instagram hotspot. To me, this is where my mom used to call home - yep one of the cramped rooms on the top of Yick Cheong Bld. Hong Kong is more than LFK or the Big Buddha on Lantau. It’s the dark narrow hallways, the metal sliding front doors, the loud auntie on the street downstairs selling congee in the morning. And it all feels right. What’s your city to you?

arrexwu

Hong Kong, China

My favourite spot in Hong Kong has to be Victoria Harbour. During the day, the harbour is filled with ferries connecting Hong Kong Island to the mainland and outlying islands. Cargo ships and cruises can also be seen navigating through this busy waterway. When night comes around, buildings light up to create a one-of-a-kind skyline. The harbour is a place that is always bustling with energy and shows how Hong Kong earned its reputation as “the city that never sleeps” 🇭🇰 @sfu_coop#myspotintheworld

One hidden gem in the busy, crowded Hong Kong. It’s a little barber shop by day, but turns into a cosy lovely bar at night with peaceful jazz music 🎵 It’s called #visageone , my favourite weekend escape spot in this fast-paced city! Miss this place very much 👍 #jazz #weekendgetaway#hongkong #myspotintheworld #sfucoop#tbt

My experience at @canchamhk has been a blast so far, but it's always nice to slow down and smell the roses... Or daffodils... Or whatever these are.
I've always liked spending time on the #roof of buildings because it gives me a chance to step away from the hustle and bustle to collect my thoughts and put things in perspective. And with all the skyscrapers in this city, the roofs in #hongkong are #myspotintheworld during this #Beedie coop. @sfu_coop

If you don't know where you're going, any road will take you there.

In #vancouver, the coast is never too far away. In #hongkong, however, water is a little harder to find. That's why this promenade overlooking Tide Cove is #myspotintheworldduring my #Beedie co-op. @sfu_coop

San Francisco, United States of America

From the top of the Twin Peaks, you can see the Downtown San Francisco, where I worked during my co-op there, and if the sky is clear enough you can have a good sight of the Golden Gate Bridge. Climbing these peaks made me think about all the challenges I overcame and what my future holds.

Singapore

After getting my Employment Pass, I took an impromptu stroll along the riverside at Boat Quay I remember thinking this place looked familiar and strange at the same time, like seeing an old friend after years apart. I had a surge of excitement and pride to be able to call this place home during my co-op work term. #singapore became #myspotintheworld

Singapore

This building, illuminated with futuristic beams and shrouded in an ethereal fog from a nearby smoke machine, is actually the oldest Christian church in Singapore. East meets West. Kinda like my life. Part East, part West, it often feels like my heart is being torn in two directions in a tug of war between identities. I'm not quite local, but not quite foreign. This co-op work term in Singapore gave the opportunity to explore these different identities and find a place where I belong. #myspotintheworld

Geneva, Switzerland

Never would I have imagined working at two of the most prestigious international organizations would be a reality for me, let alone living in Geneva, and seeing the world’s most urgent health issues being resolved first-hand.

My time at Gavi complemented my previous knowledge of the Non-Governmental Organization sector regarding matters related to financial stability & how financial aid translates into human life, deepening my understanding of the issues at hand. My experience has allowed me to see what the financial regulatory process is like in practice and from an inside perspective.

Gavi sincerely, genuinely and wholeheartedly embraced my struggle to grow. I was truly in an environment where I was supported in everything that I did-- in my mistakes, in my successes and in my professional development. I can’t thank Gavi enough for taking me in with open arms and helping me develop even further as a person. I was able to learn so much these past 7 months in Geneva and have so much love for everyone I met throughout my experience.

Merci Suisse pour tout, à bientôt!

Boseong, South Korea

tldr: boseong was nice bc of nice fields and nice people

My trip down to the Boseong Green Tea Plantation was a memorable one. @loafonaleap and i were so tired bc we both travelled from our distant towns to Boseong, an even more rural town. I mean, i think i only saw about two people out and about plus a cute lil stray dog! It was such a challenge navigating to the plantation bc we didn't know which bus to take or where to get off, not to mention the language barrier! Luckily there was a nice elderly man who offered to ride the bus with us, and then notify us (along with the yelps of the bus driver and other passengers) when we reached our stop. Deeennng was this place B E A U T I F U L. Literally the greenest place I've ever seen! And the air quality was so fresh too, almost kinda like home so it made me reminiscent of Vancouver as well. I tried eating a raw leaf and it tasted green too! So while Serena and I were hiking around, we kept bumping into this cute lil old korean couple, with whom we also exchanged picture taking services. We parted ways for a while, until Serena and i were having trouble figuring out how we were going to get back to town. We were waiting at a bus stop (or was it a taxi stop? We were still confused where we were) when a car drove up to us, and who should be inside but the same cute lil old korean couple!! They were so nice; they offered to drive us back to the bus station in town and even refused to take any of our gas money. All in all, this spot is one of my favourite places in the world bc it reminds me of the beauty in the world, both in nature and in people. Also the ice cream was so bomb 10/10 would eat again @sfu_coop #myspotintheworld

Muan, South Korea

#myspotintheworld
When I lived in the town of Muan (무안읍), the highlight and hub was the main road lined with onion lamp posts. Once in a blue moon, the street would light up, one tower at a time. At night by ten, the street would clear out, except for the sound of karaoke and soju bottles stacking in the distance.
This road was the first thing I saw in Muan, and in full circle, it became the last thing I saw as I left.

@sfu_coop (Lol so Muan provides like a quarter of Korea's onions so it's their mascot and town motif fyi)

Co-op does not necessarily equate to handing tiring or minor tasks to students. It is an opportunity for student to find their passion, working on cool project, live in the moment and experience one of the best event in the world. Yes, this is me looking back to the time when I researched soccer industry in Brazil while watching last Summer Olympics in person.

Barcelona, Spain

The authenticity of Spain's democracy was questioned when Madrid resorted to violent measures as a response to Catalonia's referendum. The silence that followed the tragedy of the deliberate intent to suppress separatist opinions were evident in the empty streets and stillness of #Barcelona.

I remain neutral in my opinion of Catalan's separatist movement; however, I felt calm and proud when walking in the alleys with decorated flags. I was aware that people were fighting for their rights and I agree that they faced many injustices and deserve their democracy. I felt I was a part of something bigger. I felt belongingness. Due to this, I have come to greatly appreciate history, politics, and the significance of peaceful negotiations. @sfu_coop

I loved visiting the local markets that took place every weekend! There were always farmers laying out their local produce and negotiating prices.

I was most surprised by the legs they had hanging on a hook or tied above ground. It is typical for Catalans to eat thinly sliced ham so that one may have it with wine and cheese. The markets are always buzzing with culture and unique food! It was definitely a highlight in my trip! @sfu_coop
