Award Payment Schedule

The information below applies to students receiving an NSERC USRA, VPR USRA Sciences, VPR USRA Social Sciences & Humanities and KEY Big Data USRA award.

A full-time NSERC, VPR or KEY Big Data USRA commitment requires students to conduct full-time research at SFU over 16 consecutive weeks with a minimum of 35 hours of research time per week. A part-time VPR/KEY Big Data USRA commitment requires students to conduct full-time research at SFU for 16 consecutive weeks with a minimum of 17.5 hours of research time per week.

Students receiving a full-time NSERC or VPR/KEY Big Data USRA are not permitted to take any courses during their research term.

Payment process for SFU Students receiving a USRA:

  1. In order to accept your USRA, you must send a signed copy of your award acceptance form via e-mail to the Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies office to be sent to gpsaward@sfu.ca.
  2. You can check with your department regarding the required documents to set up the supervisor portion of your funds with SFU payroll. Once completed, your department or supervisor must send the original payroll appointment form (PAF) to Finance.
  3. You are strongly encouraged to set up direct deposit on your go.sfu.ca account. If you do not sign up for direct deposit, your refund will be issued as a cheque that can be picked up from the Registrar's Front Counters (MBC 3000) once a month. Please see the table below for the dates. 

Payment process for students from another Canadian university receiving an NSERC USRA at SFU:
