Centre for Digital Media Scholarships

There are many scholarship opportunities available to new students in the Master of Digital Media program. More than 50% of incoming September 2015 students received a scholarship or other financial assistance.

The following scholarships are available to new students in the Master of Digital Media program. Applicants DO NOT need to apply for the scholarships. The only exception is the Pat Hibbitts Scholarship.

Centre for Digital Media Scholarships
Every year, a select number of new students who have demonstrated exceptional achievement are awarded Centre for Digital Media Scholarships. CDM Scholarships are valued at $10,000 or $5,000 apiece. Students are selected based on the quality of their sample of work and academic performance during their undergraduate studies.

Centre for Digital Media Housing Award 
The Centre for Digital Media Housing Award is allocated to a student with exceptional academic performance, superior samples of work and impressive letters of recommendation. The award consists of subsidized living at CDM’s state-of-the-art student apartments. The award is renewable each term to students who maintain good academic standing during their Master of Digital Media studies.

Tom Calvert Computer Science & Software Engineering Award 
The Tom Calvert Computer Science and Software Engineering (CS/SE) Award is awarded to a student with the best sample of work submission during the MDM application process. The award is valued at $15,000 in addition to rent-free living at the CDM’s apartments during their Master of Digital Media studies. To be considered for this award, applicants must hold a bachelors degree in computer science or software engineering.

Computer Science or Software Engineering Scholarship 
The Computer Science or Software Engineering (CS/SE) Scholarship is awarded to a student with the highest cumulative grade point average from a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science or Bachelor of Engineering in Software Engineering. The award is valued at $10,000 in addition to rent-free living at the CDM’s brand new apartments during their MDM studies. To be considered for this award, applicants must hold a bachelors degree in computer science or software engineering.

Pat Hibbitts Scholarship
The Pat Hibbitts Scholarship (PHS) was established in 2015 in honour of the late Pat Hibbits, Simon Fraser University’s former Vice-President of Finance and Administration.

The award is intended to recognize and provide funding to one incoming female graduate student in the Master of Digital Media program at the Centre for Digital Media who chooses to undergo a career change. 

One scholarship valued at $20,000 will be awarded annually in the fall term to a student who fulfills the following criteria: 

  • Demonstrates a transition from a previous non digital media-related field to digital media.
  • Possesses a minimum of 3 years work experience in a non-digital media related field.
  • Admitted into the Master of Digital Media program.

The Great Northern Way Trust Scholarship
The Great Northern Way Trust (GNWT) scholarship is intended to recognize and provide funding to eight competitive, incoming graduate students who attained, or are in the process of attaining, a bachelor's degree from one of the Great Northern Way Trust's partner institutions: the University of British Columbia, Simon Fraser University, Emily Carr University of Art + Design, or the British Columbia Institute of Technology. Students are selected based on the overall quality of their MDM application.

Eight scholarships valued at $5,000 each will be awarded annually in the fall term to students who fulfill the following criteria:

  •  Attained or is in the process of attaining a bachelors degree from one of Great Northern Way Trust’s partner institutions: the University of British Columbia, Simon Fraser University, Emily Carr University of Art + Design or the British Columbia Institute of Technology.
  • Hold a minimum cumulative grade point average (CGPA) of 3.3 in their undergraduate studies at the time of application.
  • Admitted into the Master of Digital Media program.

Dianne Sinclair Memorial Fellowship
Dr. Yosef Wosk, a supporter of the Master of Digital Media Program, established this fellowship in 2009 in memory of Dianne Sinclair. Awarded to the most outstanding female student entering the MDM Program, the recipient is given a non-renewable $1,000 annual fellowship based on her academic standing and demonstrated talent through her sample of work submitted during the application process.
