Somjee Graduate Fellowship

Terms of Reference

  1. The purpose of this award is to provide financial assistance to and reward an outstanding PhD student and two Master's students enrolled in the Department of Political Science.
  2. One fellowship will be available to a PhD student and two fellowships will be available to two Master's students. Somjee PhD fellows may be renewed for another year of funding (for a maximum of $10,000 over two years).
  3. The criteria for the fellowships are:
    1. demonstrated academic excellence at the graduate level and, if applicable, at the undergraduate level
    2. full-time registration to enter or continue at Simon Fraser University in a Master's or PhD program in the Department of Political Science
    3. promise of outstanding achievement at the graduate level with particular emphasis on intellectual ability and originality
  4. Preference will be given to those with a proposed area of study which encompasses political or international development.
  5. The student must be nominated for this fellowship by the Graduate Chair of the Department of Political Science. Students may apply on the online Grad Awards, Application and Adjudication System (GA3) and must be accompanied by:
    1. a current, unofficial SFU transcript and a copy of the transcript of the most recent degree program completed
    2. one letter of reference from a faculty member familiar with the applicant's work
    3. a curriculum vitae summarizing scholastic achievements and work relevant to the aims of this scholarship
  6. The fellowship will be granted by the Dean of Graduate Studies on behalf of the Senate Graduate Awards Adjudication Committee, upon the nomination of the Graduate Chair, Department of Political Science.
