Shahrgon Annual Graduate Award in Critical Independent Journalism Studies for the Promotion of Citizenship and Democracy

Terms of Reference

  1. The purpose of this award is to encourage and recognize students pursuing graduate studies in critical independent journalism in the School of Communication for the promotion of ideas and ideals of democratic citizenship.
  2. Preference will be given to studies that relate to Persian-speaking communities in Canada.
  3. One student cannot receive the award more than twice, whether consecutively or intermittently.
  4. The Shahrgon Annual Graduate Award is an annual award valued at approximately $2,000.
  5. The eligibility criteria for this award are:
    1. full-time registration at Simon Fraser University in a graduate program in the School of Communication
    2. demonstrated academic and research excellence at the graduate level with emphasis on intellectual ability, originality and ability in research
    3. demonstrated research in critical independent journalism for the promotion of democratic citizenship
  6. Students should be nominated for this award by the Director of the School of Communication. The nomination must be made on the online Grad Awards, Application and Adjudication System (GA3) and must be accompanied by:
    1. a current, unofficial SFU transcript
    2. a concise description (one page or less) of the proposed or actual thesis research project
    3. a curriculum vitae summarizing scholastic achievements and work relevant to the aims of this scholarship
    4. one short sample of professional, academic or business writing or a portfolio piece
    5. two letters of reference: one letter of reference from the student’s supervisor, and a second letter of reference from someone other than the supervisor who is familiar with the applicant’s research and planning activities
  7. The award will be made by the Dean of Graduate Studies on behalf of the Senate Graduate Awards Adjudication Committee upon the recommendation of the Chair of a Steering Committee comprised of the Director and faculty members in the School of Communication teaching in Journalism.
