Whitford/Stevenson Graduate Scholarship in Canadian Literature

Terms of Reference

  1. The purpose of this award is to provide financial support for a student pursuing an MA or PhD graduate degree focusing in Canadian Literature.
  2. The Whitford/Stevenson Graduate Scholarship in Canadian Literature is a one-term award valued at a portion of the earned income from the endowment.
  3. The criteria for this award are:
    1. full-time registration at Simon Fraser University in a graduate program
    2. demonstrated academic excellence
    3. specialization in the study of Canadian literature and/or comparative literature with an emphasis on Canadian literature
  4. This award may be held in conjunction with other awards made by Simon Fraser University or other agencies where permitted by those agencies.
  5. The student must be nominated for this award by the Chair of the Department of English. Application is made on the Application for a Private Graduate Scholarship form and must be accompanied by:
    1. a current, unofficial SFU transcript OR an official transcript from the most recent degree program at another post-secondary institution for a student just entering the PhD program at SFU
    2. a concise description (one page or less) of the proposed or actual MA project, paper or thesis and/or PhD dissertation
    3. a curriculum vitae summarizing scholastic achievements and work relevant to the aims of this scholarship
    4. one letter of reference from someone other than their supervisor who is familiar with the applicant’s research ability
  6. The award will be made by the Dean of Graduate Studies on the nomination of the Department of English, behalf of the Senate Graduate Awards Adjudication Committee.
