We're sharing the contest entries from our Photos of Home grad student competition.

Today's photo was taken on Kupreanof Island, Alaska. It's from Marlene Wagner, Department of Biological Sciences, who writes:

Before coming to Canada, I lived on this remote island for several years. Here, there are no cars, no electricity, and access is only by boat. The small community of Petersburg is a short float away, on neighboring Mitkof Island. This cabin was originally built as a summer camp for the southeast Alaska Episcopalian Church.

Over the years I have met and entertained several people who attended the camp when they were young, and they have shared their happy memories with me around the wood stove.

When I grow weary of the hustle and bustle of Vancouver, I close my eyes and remember this walk I took in the tide flats many years ago, and recall the delicious crisp silence of that winter afternoon.
