Contest Entry: Emily LeBaron

We're sharing the contest entries from our Show Us Your Research grad student photo competition.

This photo, entitled "Alvorada", was taken in Complexo do Alemão, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. It is from Emily LeBaron, Department of Geography, who writes:

My research focuses on the relationship between the Pacification campaign and the growth of favela tourism in Complexo do Alemão, a large cluster of favelas in Rio de Janeiro.

This photo depicts the colour and energy that this neighbourhood exudes, even on a grey day. The juxtaposition of these simple buildings and wires with the shiny new cable car is typical of this neighbourhood in transition — targeted by Pacification, and the recipient of a massive new gondola transit system.

I was lucky enough to be there to witness a small window of this transformation and this photo shares part of that.
