A researcher voted one of the World’s Most Influential Scientific Minds of 2014, a globe trotting under-water filmmaker, and a medical doctor who founded one of  North America's largest road races in his spare time.

As part of our celebrations to mark the university's 50th Anniversary, we asked graduate program staff, faculty and retirees to choose the top 50 most inspiring graduate students from the over 22,000 graduate degrees that have been conferred by SFU in the last five decades (see more of the history of Graduate Studies at SFU). 

These alumni stories demonstrate the many ways SFU's graduate students have engaged the world in order to build a better society, to solve human problems, and to bring delight and warmth to others—with of course a little help from their graduate programs.

Over and over, the alumni interviewed for this series described their time in their respective graduate program as pivotal experiences that challenged them to see the world in new ways and supported them to take their lives in new and exciting directions.

  • External Award: Canada-China Scholars' Exchange Program January 16, 2018
    Global Affairs Canada and the Chinese Ministry of Education are offering short-term scholarships (up to 12 months) to Canadians wishing to study abroad in China. Scholarships are awarded for studies, research, language studies or a combination of studies and language studies at participating Chinese institutions. Apply by March 6, 2018.

  • Job Posting: Mitacs Canadian Science Policy Fellowship January 16, 2018
    The Mitacs Canadian Science Policy Fellowship program pairs Canadian faculty members and PhD graduates with government organizations for 12-month policy projects. Apply by March 4, 2018.

  • Indigenous Film and Resurgence January 15, 2018
    The SFU Gallery and Dr. June Scudeler are putting on "Indigenous Film and Resurgence", a project that explores representation of Indigenous people in film. Films by Indigenous artists will be screened at the SFU Gallery (Burnaby campus) on Tuesdays from January 16 to April 10, 2018.
