Upcoming Mitacs Workshops

Want to gain some new professional skills this spring?

Mitacs is a national, not-for-profit organization that has designed and delivered research and training programs in Canada for 15 years. The Step workshops aim to train grad students and postdocs in career-ready skills. These online and one-day workshops are facilitated by professionals in the field and free to current grad students and postdocs. This term Mitacs is offering the following workshops at SFU:

Practical Tips for Growing Your Network - Online Workshop
Get the knowledge you need to build your network! Your time at graduate school/postdoctoral fellowship will be filled with opportunities to make connections in and outside of your field. Learn how to plan, prepare, build and foster your network and watch your opportunities unfold in front of you. 

This is an online workshop and the content can be accessed at any time during the workshop's start and end date, so you can work through it at your own pace. The estimated time needed to complete this workshop is approximately 2 -3 hours. 

Writing Strategic Business Reports - Online Workshop
Learn how to write clear and strategic business reports that achieve their intended purpose. You will learn the difference between academic and business reports, and how to tailor a report with various styles and formats according to its intended function and audience.

This is an online workshop and the content can be accessed at any time during the workshop's start and end date, so you can work through it at your own pace. The estimated time needed to complete this workshop is approximately 2 - 3 hours. 

Build Your Scientific and Technical Writing Skills 
In this two-day hands-on workshop, you will learn how to improve your scientific and technical writing skills. From structure and grammar to impact - get onsite expert feedback, a chance to work on a current, future, or past piece of your writing, and get exposure to many samples of writing.

All grad students and postdocs can attend any Mitacs session, held anywhere in BC. Check the Mitacs website for additional offerings. 

As always, Mitacs sessions are at no cost but space is limited and seats go fast so sign up now! (The workshops are free if you show up, but you are charged $50 if you do not show up. See their registration information.)

  • Summer Research Fellowship: St Andrews Visiting Scholars Scheme December 13, 2017
    The Visiting Scholarships are intended to give researchers at any level access to the University of St Andrews Library's extensive Special Collections. Successful candidates will receive financial support up to a maximum of £1,500 to cover travel and accommodation for a period of 2-8 weeks between July 1 and August 31, 2018.   • Nominations Open for Sterling Prize in Support of Controversy December 13, 2017
    Nominations are now being accepted for the Nora and Ted Sterling Prize in Support of Controversy. The prize is awarded annually for work that presents new daring and creative ways of looking at the world. Submit nominations for consideration by February 15, 2018.
