Competition has just opened for three awards adjudicated by the Centre for the Comparative Study of Muslim Societies & Cultures (CCSMSC). The deadline to submit your application on GA3 is January 31st, 2018. In order to apply, go to "Award Search" on GA3 and look for the award under the "Centre for Muslim Societies/Culture" department.

The three graduate awards available for students to apply for a Summer 2018 term payment are:

Aziz and Parin Dossa Endowed Essay Prize

The purpose of this essay prize is to recognize innovative graduate research and communication in the area of Islamic and Muslim studies within the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences.

Eligibility:

  • Registered full-time in a graduate program in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences at Simon Fraser University
  • Have written an essay of 5,000-8,000 words, excluding references, which demonstrates excellence in the analysis of Islamic and Muslim phenomena within social, cultural, and/or political contexts.  The essay will have been written within FASS in the three previous terms and indicate original scholarship, critical thought, and clarity of communication
  • Have been recommended by a faculty member in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences to the Director, Centre for the Comparative Study of Muslim Societies and Cultures

Edward Said Memorial Scholarship

The Edward W. Said Memorial Scholarship will provide an annual scholarship for a student pursuing a Master’s or Doctoral degree. The purpose of this scholarship is to provide support for a graduate student in the academic study of Muslim societies and cultures, past and present that are consistent with the mission of the Centre for the Comparative Study of Muslim Societies and Cultures (CCSMSC) at Simon Fraser University.

Eligibility:

  • Full-time registration at Simon Fraser University in a graduate program
  • Demonstrated academic and research excellence at the post-graduate level with particular emphasis on intellectual ability, originality and ability in research

Muslim Studies Grad Student Travel Award

The Muslim Studies Graduate Student Award is supported by the Dossa Endowment Fund. It supports a graduate student award for a student in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences who has undertaken research on Muslim societies and cultures.

Eligibility:

  • Enrolled in a master’s or doctoral thesis program in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences
  • Full-time registration at Simon Fraser University in a graduate program
  • Completed at least one term in a graduate program in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences
  • In a program which requires travel abroad to undertake research on some aspect of a Muslim society or culture
