Research Assistant - Institute for the Study of Teaching and Learning in the Disciplines and Department of French

Simon Fraser University’s Institute for the Study of Teaching and Learning in the Disciplines and the Department of French invites applications for 1 - 3 Research Assistant appointments for the Teaching and Learning Development Grant project “What can a blended language course bring to intermediate students in French?” to begin in January 2018.

This project will develop and study two intermediate French language courses delivered in a blended method (50% online, 50% in class). The development phase will take place between January and May 2018 followed by a study phase from Spring 2018 to Spring 2019.

There are three positions available. Applicants are encouraged to apply to one or more of the postings.

Position 1: Research assistant to assist in the design of online modules and to contribute to the creation of teaching videos on French grammar. Total appointment hours: 70-80

Required qualifications and skills:

  • Currently enrolled in a graduate program at SFU (qualified undergrads may be considered);
  • Skilled in use of screen capture and video editing software programs; and
  • French speaker or near-native language skills.

Position 2: Research assistant to contribute to the artistic design of mind maps on French language. Total appointment hours: 20-30

Required qualifications and skills:

  • Currently enrolled in a graduate program at SFU (qualified undergrads may be considered);
  • Good drawing skills, whether on paper or on a computer;
  • Basic knowledge of mind map design; and
  • Intermediate level of French (written and spoken).

Position 3: Research assistant to undertake literature review on blended second language learning and teaching; design surveys, collect and summarize data from surveys and Canvas, and to support the dissemination of project findings within and beyond SFU. Total appointment hours: 30-40

Required qualifications and skills:

  • Currently enrolled in a graduate program at SFU;
  • Experience with instrument design such as surveys;
  • Experience with basic data analysis;
  • Intermediate level of French (written and spoken); and
  • Excellent written English skills.

Rate of pay: $20 - $25/hr (incl. vacation and statutory holiday pay, no medical or dental benefits) - based on experience, qualifications and degree program.
