Indigenous Film and Resurgence

January 15, 2018

The SFU Gallery and Dr. June Scudeler are putting on "Indigenous Film and Resurgence", a project that explores representation of Indigenous people in film. Films by Indigenous artists will be screened at the SFU Gallery (Burnaby campus) on Tuesdays from January 16 to April 10, 2018. For more information, please visit the SFU Gallery website.

Message from the SFU Gallery:

"Join us for a new semester-long project at SFU Gallery lead by Dr. June Scudeler in which you are invited to have soup and watch Indigenous films in the gallery as part of a course. Screenings are open to the public to be followed by a closed class only for registered students.

The representation of Indigenous people is prevalent in non-Indigenous film and TV, such as in Buffy the Vampire Slayer’s Thanksgiving episode and Fear the Walking Dead’s inclusion of Apache people. This series includes works by Indigenous artists that have been created over the past three decades to better control or counter such depictions as acts of resurgence. Films include Neil Diamond’s Reel Injun, Helen Haig-Brown’s The Cave, Kevin Lee Burton’s Writing the Land, Kent Monkman’s Future Nation, Randy Redroad’s The Doe Boy, and films by Shelley Niro, Thirza Cuthand, Marie Clements, Jeff Barnaby, and many others."
