Highlighting the experiences of recent Semester in Dialogue grads: Megan te Boekhorst, "Religion, Spirituality, Contemplative Inquiry and Social Action" (2011).

What semester did you participate in?

Fall 2011’s “Religion, Spirituality, Contemplative Inquiry and Social Action.”

What was one highlight from the semester?

The biggest change in me as a result of my semester has been my passion and inspiration to develop projects. I now feel empowered and encouraged to pursue my creative and influential ideas outside of the classroom and stop waiting for a reason or another platform to create social change: I can create my own platform.

What are you doing differently now as a result of the semester?

The biggest change in me as a result of my semester has been my passion and inspiration to develop projects. I now feel empowered and encouraged to pursue my creative and influential ideas outside of the classroom and stop waiting for a reason or another platform to create social change: I can create my own platform.

Tell us about one of your projects in the Semester and why it mattered to you?

My cohort was challenged to ‘try something new’ for one month related to our course topic. Some read the Quran, others tried meditating, and I did a complete diet change and went vegetarian. This was a big challenge as I hate vegetables, am one of the pickiest eaters you will ever meet and have cried over a steak because it tasted so delicious. I also had a very unhealthy relationship with food and had many disordered eating habits. My friends and family never thought I could do it. However, a month of following a diet that aligned with my ethics and morals allowed me to connect with my spirituality on a deeper level and reevaluate my relationship with food. I’ve now gone two years as a vegetarian and haven’t looked back.

What are you doing now that you want to tell the world about?

I am continually growing in ways in which I can help others connect with themselves and create their ideal life. I love to work one-on-one with people or in groups to goal coach and encourage them to actively pursue bliss. I am developing a blog focusing on work+life+health balance while building workshops for personal and professional development. Though I’m still in the building stages while I finish up my last couple of semesters, I am bursting at the seams to bring this fresh and inspiring project to the world.
