Student Spotlight: Elliott Shaw
What semester/theme did you participate in?
I participated in the Fall 2018 Semester at CityStudio. We worked on projects relating to the municipal election and upcoming city-wide plan.
Tell us about one of your projects in the Semester and why it mattered to you? In what way did the project have a positive impact on the community?
We hosted a large voting advocacy event in partnership with the city of Vancouver in order to encourage voter turnout at the 2018 municipal election. The event was a huge success and we were able to draw a lot of attention from the community. We created interactive presentations to educate the public about voting and it was one of the proudest moments for the cohort.
What was one highlight from the semester?
The retreat was definitely a highlight. Spending time with the cohort outdoors and getting to know each other in an environment that forced me out of my shell. It was a great way to begin the semester and prepare us for the work ahead.
How do you plan to use what you learned in the Semester in Dialogue in your future career?
I carry forward not only the professional experience from the Semester, but all the ways in which we learned to connect with each other. I value those interpersonal skills, and will use them in all my future endeavors.
What are you doing now/planning to do that you want to tell the world about?
I was fortunate enough to spend a semester abroad in Denmark. Having returned to Vancouver recently, I am unpacking the value of living in city apart from my hometown. My experience with the Semester in Dialogue prepared me to open my mind and absorb the thoughts and feelings that come along with living and studying in a new city.
Over the next few weeks we will feature past Semester in Dialogue students who are doing incredible work in their communities.
