Changes

Historical Geology was cancelled in Spring 2007 due to low enrolment.

As of Spring 2008, it has not been reinstated.

In Fall 2008, a new timetable system will reduce the number of contact hours with the students from 4 hours of lecture plus 2 hours of lab to something like 3 hours of lecture and 1.5 or 2 hours of lab (the exact details are not available).

Capilano College has been “named” a University. So far all this means is that there is funding to change the signs, the stationery, the logo, and so on, but not enough to maintain a geology department.

Programs/Courses

Fall 2007: Geology 110, Physical Geology, 1 section, 22 students

Spring 2008: Geology 110, Physical Geology (offered at an awkward time), 8 students, cancelled

Facilities

Capilano College has one small windowless rock storage room, and one shared classroom. There is no place for students to study rock samples or maps outside of class. There is no computer for the lab room, and only library access to a computer that might show power point, and no projector.

The rock collection and fossil collection are good and adequate, although they could be stored more conveniently.

Issues/Challenges

Yearly budget includes funding for one bus for one fieldtrip in the fall, and nothing else.

There is no support for Geology to improve. Students cannot study outside class.

Scheduling is constrained by college-wide mutant timetable.
