Staffing

Eight full-time in Geography/Geology. Lyle Courtney to retire this year.

Enrolment Trends

Enrollment numbers were down slightly from previous years. Geology 1210 (Historical) was held on the Richmond campus with much lower enrollment (10/30). Lost some sections of 1120 this year.

 Initiatives

1. Advertising, posters for Geology 1210 will continue. The Lab block for 1210 (4 hours) is tough to schedule for students. Geol 1210 may not be offered next spring.

2. Associate of Science Degree (AsSc.) in Geography has been updated. All geology courses included in this as an elective in other science degree programs.

3. A Minor in Geography is now offered. Program will require one third year physical/geography presently natural hazards.

Issues/Challenges

1. Textbooks Geog 1120 Tarbuck, Earth . Newest Canadian edition

Geol 1210 Levin. Earth Through Time . Latest edition

 What do other institutions use?

2. We are officially KPU!

3. Our students mainly take Geog 1120 and Geol 1210 as a science requirement and alternate to chemistry, biology and physics. One to three students are potentially going on in Earth Science.

4. John Martin is going on Ed Leave for one year (Fall 2009-Fall 2010)

5. Field trips for first year courses, problems with scheduling and timing ? Other institutions?

Transfers

As I recall, 3 Physical Geog/Geol courses requested transferability to Kwantlen in 2008-2009. These are done on an individual basis.

Two first year courses were given full credit as GEOG 1120. One course denied (general science course).
