In Memoriam: Alumnus Glenn Berg
It is with great sadness that the SFU Economics community shares news of the passing of alumnus Glenn Berg on December 15, 2025. Glenn was a valued member of our alumni community and a longtime supporter of our undergraduate students.
Glenn was a familiar face at our alumni events and often volunteered his expertise as a judge for the Economics Student Society (ESS) Case Competition or a speaker at the ESS Career night, and he was scheduled to present a series of workshops for undergraduate students this spring. He maintained active connections with other alumni as well.
In 2014, he reached out to SFU Advancement to establish the Glenn Berg Enterprising Achiever Award. This award recognizes undergraduate economics students who achieve academic excellence while also succeeding in non-academic pursuits such as owning a business or participating in extracurricular activities. Matthew Sebastiani, the first winner of the award, says “Glenn was one of the most generous and thoughtful people I met during my time at SFU. As the inaugural recipient of his award, I experienced the impact of his commitment to supporting students and the value of his advice and encouragement. Glenn’s passion for helping young people succeed shaped many students’ lives.”
Glenn graduated with a Bachelor of Arts with Honours in Economics from Simon Fraser University in 1992 and went on to pursue an incredible 18-year career with Microsoft. He authored 3 books and pursued a variety of his own business and personal ventures. He was endlessly curious and shared his enthusiasm and his knowledge generously with SFU students.
Azam Bhatti, the department’s alumni engagement officer, says Glenn was “a vital part of our econ alumni community. The passion he brought to our community was immeasurable. He mentored so many students, and he will be dearly missed by all."
The department is deeply grateful for Glenn’s generous contributions and will miss his presence at our alumni events. The department offers our condolences to the Berg family at this difficult time.
