Ian Andrews and Renate Doege Memorial ITEM Award
engaging students, internationalization of education
Ian Andrews and Renate Doege Memorial International Teacher Education Module (ITEM) Award at the Faculty of Education provides opportunities for students to gain international teaching experience. Understanding and being sensitive to the learning needs of people from different cultures and values is critical, as teachers in Canada work with students from diverse ethnic, religious, and socio-economic backgrounds.
Established in 1996, the ITEM module currently offers placements in Dharamsala, India; Oaxaca, Mexico; and, Xian, China. Students live with host families or on campus residences. At their international site they engage in a rigorous program of in-classroom practicum experience combined with instructional seminars, including language and culture classes.
