"Although there is always room to grow as a leader and mentor, I can honestly say that the two years spent in the program have offered me countless opportunities to be a better teacher, colleague and leader at my school ... and within my district."

My name is Amanda Salkeld. I am a BASES teacher at Queen Elizabeth Secondary school in Surrey, BC. I completed Leadership, Mentorship, and Collaboration Graduate Diploma in Education (GDE) program in the Faculty of Education at Simon Fraser University in 2020.

I discovered this program while searching online for a program that would best fit my goal of expanding my skills as a leader at my school. I am incredibly grateful to have been accepted into this GDE, as my purpose for applying has been achieved and then some! Although there is always room to grow as a leader and mentor, I can honestly say that the two years spent in the program have offered me countless opportunities to be a better teacher, colleague and leader at my school ... and within my district. I use the practical tools and ideas that I learnt on a daily basis. The program also helped me gain the courage to tackle new opportunities that I have lacked the confidence to in the past.

An added bonus of this program were the wonderful friendships I made with other teachers in my district. I have learned just as much from my relationships with them than I have from the program itself. Therefore, I highly recommend this program for any teacher who is looking to gain further professional knowledge, as well as make lasting connections with other teachers.
