Innovations in Mathematics Education (Fraser Valley) - Spring 2021

OVERVIEW

This Graduate Diploma in Advanced Professional Studies in Education (GDE) program has been developed for elementary and middle school educators interested in exploring innovations in mathematics education and examining multiple perspectives on the teaching and learning of mathematics.

Due to current Health and Safety protocols, the Spring 2021 term will be conducted online, through both synchronous and asynchronous methods. Courses will embody the program's core foundations of relationship building, inquiry and collaborative learning.

PROGRAM THEMES
  • Develop insights into the role of mathematics in society and the natural development of mathematics as a growing, changing entity
  • Develop insights into the human aspects of mathematics
  • Develop insights into the developments of the school mathematics curriculum and pedagogy as it relates to historical, cultural and psychological forces operating within society
  • Develop insights into the nature of mathematics and its place in the school curriculum
  • Become familiar with changes in the curriculum and reporting mandate
  • Develop a broad understanding of mathematics and mathematics education
  • Develop the qualities to deal with curriculum changes in the next several decades
  • Become familiar with research on how elementary students learn mathematics
  • Become familiar with contemporary ideas on how to best teach elementary students mathematics

This two-year, 30-unit program of study is for teachers whose primary focus is school-based educational practice. It provides the opportunity to engage in focused, sustained reflective inquiry. Completion of the diploma allows teachers to move from TQS category 4 to TQS 5 or from category 5 to 5+.

    *Decisions regarding the program location will be based on the majority of applicant's school districts.
