Friends of Simon Receives the 2025 Council of the Federation Literacy Award

November 27, 2025

Recently, Friends of Simon was named the British Columbia recipient of the 21st annual Council of the Federation Literacy Award by Canada’s Premiers. The award recognizes the program’s innovation and excellence in literacy.

“This recognition is a testament to the wonderful work that is done by the dedicated Friends of Simon tutors, our school district and community partners and the faculty and staff that have supported us over the past 20 years!"

- Amrit Cojocaru, Friends of Simon Program Coordinator.

Since 2006, Friends of Simon has been helping newcomer and marginalized K-12 students to strengthen their literacy skills and confidence. This SFU Faculty of Education initiative equips university students to become K-12 literacy tutors and delivers after-school programs for youth in the public education system.

This achievement highlights the lasting impact that their inclusive and culturally informed work has on youth education.

The Council of the Federation Literacy Award recognizes individuals and organizations that have made outstanding contributions to literacy across Canada.

“Friends of Simon shows how skilled teaching and compassion can transform learning. Congratulations to the tutors, coordinators and community partners who have helped newcomer children find confidence, voice and success in school — this Literacy Award celebrates the heart of our Faculty’s commitment to inclusive education, and I’m thrilled that the Premiers across Canada have recognized that.”

- Dan Laitsch, Dean of Faculty of Education
