Education alumni and school associates honoured with teaching excellence awards
The Prime Minister’s Awards for Teaching Excellence acknowledge the exemplary efforts of Canadian teachers who ‘instill in their students a love of learning, help them excel and build a successful future’ Government of Canada (2013, Prime Minister’s Awards for Teaching Excellence). The awards given are either a Certificate of Excellence (national level) or a Certificate of Achievement (regional level), and have cash prizes of $5,000 and $1,000 respectively.
Congratulations to the following SFU Education alumni and school associate recipients!
SFU Education Alumni
School: John Knox Christian School
Subjects and grades taught: all subjects except for Music (grade 3)
Achievement: DeWith takes every opportunity to take her students out of the classroom and into environments where they learn lessons pertinent to the real world.

School: Thunderbird Elementary School
Subjects and grades taught: Kindergarten
Achievement: With a classroom of culturally diverse students, Lee ensures her lessons are relevant to all her learners. To help foster the diversity, she asks parents to actively participate in their children’s learning, so they in turn can share their own culture with their classmates.
School: Guildford Park Secondary School
Subjects and grades taught: Career Education, English, Psychology, Social Studies, Skills Development for grades 9 to 11
Achievement: Stipp encourages his students to moderate their own learning and examine ideas outside the curriculum, so they can become more engaged citizens in our society.
School: Florence Nightingale School
Subjects and grades taught: kindergarten
Achievement: Wong instills a sense of wonderment in her students beyond the classroom walls through the use of technology in her teaching.
SFU School Associate
School: Sir Winston Churchill Secondary School
Subjects and grades taught: Law, Social Justice 12
Achievement: After 32 years as a teacher, Katsionis’ love of teaching is still evident through the work he has done, not only as an online and in classroom teacher, but also a course developer and an author.
