Meeting with Mark Roman, Chief Information Officer

November 19, 2019

The Dean and Director of Administration, Debbie Pruner, met with Mark Roman, SFU’s Chief Information Officer about the IT needs of the Faculty of Education and various support services and projects involving enterprise systems in the University. Prior to joining SFU in 2015, Mark Roman was Past President of CUCCIO (Canadian University Council of CIOs) and Associate Vice President of Information and Communications Technology for the University of Saskatchewan.

Equity Studies Lecture Series

November 18, 2019

Dr. O’Neill introduced the Fall Equity Studies Lecture Series, with speaker Dr. Shirley Steinberg, who gave a powerful and inspiring speech about the need to support youth relevant pedagogy in her talk “You say you want a revolution: Criticalizing youth activism in the post-truth era”. The Equity Studies Lecture Series is organized by the coordinators of the Equity Studies in Education program, Özlem Sensoy and Kumari Beck.

ABCDE November Meeting

November 15, 2019

The Dean attended the November meeting of the Association of BC Deans of Education. Several topics were discussed including a proposal for enhancing Indigenous educational opportunities for BC’s schools supported by funding from the BC Ministry of Education.

Executive Committee Social at Burnaby Campus

November 14, 2019

The Dean and other members of the Executive Committee hosted the 2nd Executive Committee Social at Burnaby campus for faculty and staff.

Meeting with Dr. Richard Vedan, Indigenous Knowledge Holder

November 13, 2019

Dr. Susan O’Neill met with the Faculty of Education Elder and Indigenous Knowledge Holder Dr. Richard Vedan to discuss leadership for supporting Indigeneity in the Faculty of Education. Dr. Vedan has over 40 years experience as a social worker and social educator.

South Asian Regional Conference - Nepal

November 04-06, 2019

Dr. Susan O’Neill was a keynote speaker at the 2nd South Asian Regional Conference in her role as President of the International Society for Music Education, an affiliate of UNESCO. She met with the Nepalese Minister of Education and other top ranking officials in arts and culture to promote arts education opportunities and the preservation of ancient cultural traditions in the region.
