Program Outcomes

AHCOTE has 10 program goals that student teachers must satisfy in order to successfully complete their transition from student to teacher. Upon successful completion, student teachers are recommended for a Teaching Certificate with the Teacher Certification Branch of the BC Ministry of Education.

AHCOTE graduates receive either a Conditional or Professional Teaching Certificate:

  • Conditional Certificate (five year duration): Issued to AHCOTE graduates who are still working toward a degree but have completed the required minimum credits as well as all prerequisite courses. These students must complete a four year degree within five years to continue teaching. Upon completion of a degree, the TCB would issue a Professional Certificate.
  • Professional Certificate (non expiring): Issued to AHCOTE graduates who have completed a full degree and all of the required prerequisite requirements.

Optional: Bachelor of Education (BEd) as a second degree

With careful course and minor selection during the professional coursework semester of the PLP, student teachers have the option of completing a Bachelor of Education (BEd) as a second degree during the program.

To do so, student teachers must have a Bachelor's degree from an approved institution and meet SFU's literacy and quantitative requirements. Student teachers must also:

  • Take a minimum 15 upper division EDUC units during the EDUC 404 semester, including a Q course;
  • Meet the requirements of an Education minor within the 15 upper division EDUC units;

Although it is strictly optional, the BEd as a second degree is an internationally-recognized credential and a great option for student teachers who are considering teaching overseas. Completion of the BEd as a second degree does not affect the BC Teaching Certificate recommendation nor does it add any additional time or cost to complete the program.
