Message regarding ITEM travel:

Thank you for your interest in our International Teacher Education Module. As health concerns continue over the COVID-19 pandemic, the University has made the difficult decision to cancel the travel portions of ITEM 2022 to ensure the safety of our students and international partners.

We will continue to have an international education-themed module without a travel portion. Virtual connections with our educational partners in Oaxaca, Mexico and Dharamsala, India will continue in order to provide student teachers with focused insights into education through a global lens. There will be no added cost for this module but please note that there will be additional seminars, workshops and learning experiences above and beyond the regular EDUC 400 course content and calendar.

Please continue check this website for more information on the ITEM-at-Home experience. If you have any questions, please contact Sarine Sadhra, the Program Coordinator supporting the ITEM module, at ssadhra@sfu.ca

International Teacher Education Module (ITEM)

ITEM focuses on the “internationalization” of education and encourages student teachers to develop global perspectives. In ITEM, student teachers examine issues and challenges faced by students and teachers in BC schools where diversity, global education, English-as-an-additional-language and intercultural communication have become critical and integral components of the curriculum and classroom life.

First introduced in 1999 with a pilot trip to Mexico, the ITEM module has since given student teachers the opportunity to explore life and education in several countries, including Trinidad and Tobago, China and India. Today, the ITEM module travels to Dharamsala, India and Oaxaca, Mexico from approximately mid-October to early December during the EDUC 400 semester.

School experiences and practica will take place throughout the Lower Mainland.
