Mandy McInnes

My name is Mandy McInnes and I live in the lower mainland. I love learning new things and challenging myself. I was an avid soccer player on a rep team until I was eighteen then I became busy with university (although I still find the time to play the game with my friends). I also enjoy reading and being around my friends and family in my spare time.

How I Discovered The Program

I was originally a part of the General Studies program but then my advisor informed me that I could have a similar degree but with a focus on education, which is perfect for me as I have plans to go into teaching for as long as I can remember.

Why Faculty of Education

I have always wanted to be a teacher. In high school I would volunteer at my old elementary school every week and build relationships with the new teachers in order to receive guidance about how to be a teacher. My mom became a special education assistant (SEA) when I was ten and would come home and tell me how much she loved her job of teaching children with special needs. Her journey encouraged me to alter my plans slightly. I decided to become a special education assistant right out of high school so that I could learn more and excel as a teacher. I have been an SEA for the past three years and I have made great connections and I have learned so much. Although I took the left path when I came to a fork in the road, I never forgot that my goal is to be a teacher, so I made sure to continue as a full time student.

Instructor of Note

I enjoyed Jacqueline Barrerio's teaching methods as she created a welcoming classroom where my classmates and I felt confident and safe to share our opinions. She created a sense of community and encouraged us to seek out different people in the class to communicate with. It was an interactive and interesting course and I feel like I was able to learn a lot from her EDUC 100W class.

Best Learning Experience

My best learning experiance at SFU would be when I took an anthropology course. I knew it wouldn't go towards my program, but it interested me and showed me that although I could study almost any subjects and enjoy it, taking education courses are what makes me happy.

I love learning and I will keep attending school until I have obtained my master's and perhaps even after that. My mom is a big inspiration for me as she is a single mom raising four kids. She always talks about how she would have loved to keep going to school and learn a little bit of everything but feels like she is too far along in life to go back (she is also unsure financially). I feel like I owe it to my mom to put myself through school and enjoy every moment of it, and that is something I am more than happy to do.

Prospective Student Advice

I would tell new students to go as fast or as slow as they can, just stick with it! This is an amazing field to be a part of and you will not regret it. I would also tell them to put themselves out there and volunteer. It is so important to have experience and to create relationships with other educators because they have so much wisdom to share. Educations is an amazing community that aims to help children find their path and show them how much fun learning can be. If you want to make a difference in children's lives, then this program is definitely for you.

Additional Sharing

I have immensely enjoyed my time at SFU and I cannot wait for this upcoming semester.
