School of Mechatronic Systems Engineering

Mechatronics Day marks its fifth year of community and connection

September 23, 2026

SFU Mechatronics Day took place on September 18, continuing the annual tradition that began in 2022.

The event brought together students, alumni, faculty, staff, industry representatives and community partners to celebrate achievements, share new ideas and strengthen connections across the Mechatronics community. The afternoon highlighted the diverse work taking place within the School of Mechatronic Systems Engineering (MSE), showcasing the innovation and collaboration that drive the community forward.

Activities included a QCA Systems seminar on smarter systems and their applications across mining, minerals, infrastructure and transportation, followed by a Five-Minute Thesis competition where graduate students presented their research to industry judges and the audience. Guests also explored the School’s innovation ecosystem through laboratory tours highlighting research in injury biomechanics, hydrogen technologies, 3D printing and advanced sensors. Student groups highlighted hands-on learning beyond the classroom, while industry demonstrations connected emerging technologies to real-world applications.

The day also celebrated the achievements of students and alumni making an impact within the School and beyond. Students were honoured with awards recognizing accomplishments in research, leadership, entrepreneurship, industry engagement, teaching and community service, while alumni honours highlighted the lasting impact of an SFU Mechatronics education across industry, academia and entrepreneurship. Together, their achievements reflect the leadership, innovation and collaboration at the heart of the Mechatronics community.

As MSE celebrates the fifth anniversary of Mechatronics Day, the School continues to embrace what makes its community unique: curiosity, ingenuity and a strong sense of connection that brings people together and carries SFU Mechatronics forward.

“Mechatronics Day reflects the family spirit at the heart of our School,” says MSE school director John Shen. “It brings students, alumni, faculty and partners together to celebrate our students, their achievements, creativity and potential, while strengthening the connections that help them thrive.”

“Five years into this tradition, it is inspiring to see our community continue to grow while preserving the close relationships that make SFU Mechatronics so special," adds MSE associate director Woo Soo Kim. "That collaborative spirit is one of our greatest strengths, driving the interdisciplinary innovation and real-world impact at the heart of mechatronics.”
