At age 50, after almost 30 years of raising children, Julie Shum took an SFU diploma program in gerontology and became so interested in the issues that she applied to the master’s program.

“Despite my long absence from formal schooling, an undergraduate degree in a completely different sphere (engineering), and a lack of high digital literacy, I was accepted,” says Shum.
