On October 16th, members of the SFU community gathered for a Coast Salish Kwis Ns7eyx̱ (Witness) ceremony, where the SFU Aboriginal Reconciliation Council (ARC) presented their calls to action for reconciliation to SFU President Andrew Petter. The ceremony celebrated and honoured the work of the council over the last two years in facilitating and supporting broad discussions of how the 94 recommendations of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission will be addressed at the university.

ARC’s report, aptly titled, “Walk this Path with Us,” is now available online and consists of 33 calls to action organized into four clusters:

·       Creating safe and welcoming spaces for Aboriginal peoples

·       Curriculum innovation and indigenization

·       Student pathways and support

·       Administration, hiring and project implementation

Simon Fraser University has committed $9M toward projects to promote reconciliation within the SFU community.
