Applying for financial aid as a student can be a confusing process at times. At FASS, we want to ensure everyone can access and receive the proper help they need, when they need it.

SCHOLARSHIPS

Scholarships recognize outstanding academic achievement and are available to Canadian and international students. If you are awarded a scholarship, Financial Aid and Awards will notify you in writing.

I just applied to SFU. How do I get entrance scholarships?

Go to the Financial Aid page for entrance scholarships.  

Who can apply?

Scholarships are available to both international and Canadian students. To be eligible to apply for a scholarship you must:

  • have completed at least 12 units of standard graded courses at SFU. (exception for students with disabilities who must only be enrolled in 6 credits and must have a letter from the Centre for Accessible Learning)

  • be enrolled in a minimum of 12 units of standard graded courses at SFU in the term of application.

  • have a minimum CGPA of 3.50 at SFU and be in good academic standing.

*A student holding an SFU entrance scholarship is not eligible for any other University administered scholarship until the entrance scholarship is fully paid out.

How do I apply for a scholarship?

  • Check the application period and final deadline at Application Deadlines.

  • Review the financial aid database (https://awards-search.sfu.ca/) to determine which scholarships you want to apply for.

  • Apply online by logging in to the Student Information System (go.sfu.ca).

  • Click on "Student Center".

  • Go to Financial Aid and Awards (under Finances).

  • Click on "Apply for Scholarships/Awards".

  • List the scholarships/awards you want to apply for on your online application.

  • Complete and submit your application.

  • Set up Direct Deposit (administered through the Student Accounts Office) as soon as possible, to receive any refunds you may be eligible to receive.

What are the deadlines to apply?

The application periods for 2020–2021: (In case of discrepancy, the FAA website's deadlines are final)

  • Fall: August 31 – September 18, 2020

  • Spring: December 21, 2020 – January 15, 2021

  • Summer: May 4 – May 22, 2021

When will I get paid?

Payment of funds may not occur until the end of the term of application.

What is an Open Scholarship?

The Undergraduate Open Scholarship recognizes and supports undergraduate students who are highly qualified academically and awards scholarships to students on a term by term basis.  No application is required; students who meet eligibility criteria are automatically considered for the Open Scholarship.

BURSARIES

Bursaries are a supplemental source of funding for students with demonstrated financial need; that is, they should not be treated as your primary source of funding. You should be aware that you may not be awarded a bursary every term.

Who can apply?

Available to Canadian and international students. To be eligible to apply for a bursary, you must:

  • have a demonstrated financial need (as assessed by SFU)
  • be enrolled in a minimum of 9 units of standard graded courses in the term of application
  • be in good academic standing and have a minimum CGPA of 2.00 at SFU in the term of application (waived in your first term at SFU).

How do I apply?

  1. Check the application period at Application Deadlines.
  2. Apply online by logging in to the Student Information System (go.sfu.ca).
  3. Click on "Apply for Bursaries/Work-Study".
  4. Complete and submit your application.
  5. Set up Direct Deposit (administered through the Student Accounts Office) as soon as possible, to receive any refunds you may be eligible to receive.

**You do not need to specify the individual bursaries for which you want to apply.  If you are eligible, you will be considered for all available bursaries.

When will I get paid?

Payment of funds to eligible students will be processed in the middle of the term of application, after the tuition payment deadline.

AWARDS

Awards are given in recognition of distinguished intellectual, cultural, social, or athletic achievements or contributions to the community.  

Who can apply?

Awards are available to Canadian and international students. To apply for an award, you must:

  • be in good academic standing and have a minimum CGPA of 2.00 at SFU during the term of application (waived in your first term at SFU).

  • be enrolled in a minimum of 9 units of standard graded courses at SFU in the term of application (exception for students with disabilities who must only be enrolled in 6 credits. They must have a letter from the Centre for Accessible Learning (CAL) ).

  • Check the application period and final deadline at Application Deadlines.

  • Apply online by logging in to the Student Information System (go.sfu.ca).

  • Click on "Student Center".

  • Click on "Apply for Scholarships/Awards".

  • List the scholarships/awards you want to apply for on your online application.

What are the SFU Service Awards?

Every year, Financial Aid and Awards accepts applications for the SFU Service Awards. The SFU Service Awards recognize outstanding unpaid service to the University community and/or the community at large, leadership and volunteer work. These awards are available to SFU undergraduate students but the B.C. Sugar Achievement Award is also available to SFU Faculty members. The application for 2020 Service Awards opens on March 16, 2020 and closes on April 17, 2020. Successful applicants will be notified of their awards by mid-June.
