It pays to study in French

Choosing to study in French at SFU means having access (sometimes exclusively) to a multitude of awards and bursaries that can cover a part of your university fees.

Read the following sections to discover all your options and keep in mind that you can apply for multiple awards and bursaries at the same time. Remember that you may also be eligible for student loans and financial aid managed by SFU.

Undergraduate Studies

Apply before you enter SFU

OFFA AWARD - $500

OFFA offers two awards worth $500 to grade 12 graduates who have been newly admitted to the French Cohort Program in Public and International Affairs.

In grade 12: until May 31

The Fédération des francophones de la Colombie-Britannique (FFCB) and the Office of Francophone and Francophile Affairs (OFFA) offer two $1,000 bursaries each year to graduates of the Programme francophone or French immersion in BC. At least one of the two bursaries is awarded to a student who plans to continue his/her studies at SFU and take courses in French. These scholarships are intended to reward involvement in French within the high school and the Francophone community.

WHEN TO APPLY?

In grade 12: until May 15

OFFA and SFU’s Department of French offer two $2,500 bursaries as part of the National Essay Contest organized by French for the Future.

WHEN TO PARTICIPATE?

Grades 10, 11 and 12: between September and December

APPLY WHILE STUDYING AT SFU

Bursaries intended for students whose first official language spoken is English and who are studying full-time at SFU in a program taught in French.

WHEN TO APPLY?

Once over the course of the entirety of ones post-secondary studies: between July and September

Bursary offered by the Ministry of Education and Child Care of British Columbia to students studying at SFU full-time in a program offered primarily in French. The amount of the bursary is $625 per term, up to a maximum of $1,250 per year and is capped at a maximum of $5,000 per student.

At the beginning of each term: September and January

FCP EXCHANGE AWARDS - $500 or more

Award offered to students in the French Cohort Program in Public and International Affairs who have a good academic record and who have been accepted into the formal exchange program at a Francophone university.

Award offered jointly by the Fondation des francophones de la Colombie-Britannique and OFFA that recognizes and rewards a student's or graduate's commitment to their community through their dedication to the promotion of the French language and francophonie in British Columbia. The annual amount offered is $3,000.

Teacher Education Programs

Bursaries intended for students whose first official language spoken is English and who are studying full-time at SFU in a program taught in French.

WHEN TO APPLY?

Once over the course of the entirety of ones post-secondary studies: between July and September

Bursary offered by the Ministry of Education and Child Care of British Columbia to students enrolled in a French-language teacher education program (French Module of the Professional Development Program or Professional Linking Program).

WHEN TO APPLY?

For the Fall and Summer terms: Mid September to mid October and end of March to end of April

Up to 2 awards offered annually by Canadian Parents for French – B.C. & Yukon to students completing a teacher education program to teach French (Immersion, Intensive, Core, or Francophone Program) in British Columbia.

Graduate Studies and Pro-D for Inservice Teachers

Bursaries intended for students whose first official language spoken is English and who are studying full-time at SFU in a program taught in French.

WHEN TO APPLY?

Once over the course of the entirety of ones post-secondary studies: between July and September

Bursary offered by the Ministry of Education and Child Care of British Columbia to students studying at SFU full-time in a program offered primarily in French. The amount of the bursary is $625 per term, up to a maximum of $1,250 per year and is capped at a maximum of $5,000 per student.

Only for those who are not in-service teachers who are enrolled in a Master's or Doctoral program.

WHEN TO APPLY?

At the beginning of each term: September and January

Bursary offered by the Ministry of Education and Child Care of British Columbia to B.C. certified teachers or teachers practicing with a letter of permission, who are enrolled in a graduate program in education that is taught primarily in French at SFU. The amount is a maximum of $1,500 per year for 2 years for graduate diplomas and master's degrees, or $2,000 per year for 3 years for doctorates.

WHEN TO APPLY?

At the beginning of each semester: in September and January

Bursary offered by the Ministry of Education and Child Care of British Columbia to B.C. teachers of French-language education programs who take courses, attend seminars or enrol in professional development programs to improve their pedagogical and linguistic skills in French. Several non-credit programs in SFU’s Faculty of Education, such as the FrancoFUN Weeks and the annual conference J'enseigne en français, are eligible for this bursary.

After registering for the training, before February 28
