FCAT & SIAT partner with two BC school districts to bring new learning opportunities to indigenous students

August 06, 2024

This spring, as part of The Faculty of Communication, Art and Technology's multi-year memorandum of understanding with the Nechako Lakes School District (SD91), staff and students from FCAT and the School of Interactive Arts & Technology (SIAT) visited schools in the district. Over the course of the two-day visit, elementary and high school students participated in workshops run by the SIAT group.

A class of high school students from SD91 returned the favor in April when they made the trip down to Vancouver to visit our campuses and attend FCAT’s Undergraduate & Graduate Conference (UGC).

Here are some of our favourite photos from these visits.

At the end of April, the School of Interactive Arts & Technology hosted 36 Indigenous elementary school students from the Surrey School District (SD36), along with 10 teachers and guardians, for a Day of Play.

Students spent the day at the SFU Surrey campus, participating in workshops with Jon Corbett and Gillian Russell, Fred Lesage and Samein Shamsher, where they learned about game design, protesting, and made their own protest pins. Highlights from the day included a very competitive game of Graphic Design Jeopardy – the students took home a victory against their teachers – and a pizza lunch!

This is the second annual field trip that has been organized between SD36 and SIAT with the goals of hosting fun, play-based experiences for Indigenous youth.

All in all, the events were a success and we look forward to continuing to strengthen FCAT’s relationship with the communities of both SD91 and SD36!
