Meet new FENV student Max, climate activist and a recipient of the 2022 SFU Entrance Scholarship
The Faculty of Environment welcomes Max MacInnes-Cann, a recipient of the 2022 SFU Entrance Scholarship who joins us from New Westminster Secondary School to study global environmental systems (GES) in the Department of Geography. SFU entrance scholarships are awarded to students who demonstrate excellence in both academic and extracurricular activities.
From organizing fundraisers and leading team meetings with the youth-led organization Sustainabiliteens to speaking at a number of climate strikes as an MC, Max has a history of doing important work as a fearless advocate for climate justice. She’s attending SFU determined to gain a strong understanding of global environmental systems and how they work together and independently from one another. This knowledge is crucial to advancing her goal of creating wide-scale positive change to save the planet, she says.
Max’s favourite places on campus so far are the Women’s Centre and the Out on Campus room. “I feel so welcome and safe in these spaces, and I have met lots of great people there,” she says. She also looks forward to organizing with the climate activist group SFU350 and is excited to plan in-person actions now that things are open again.
Eventually Max plans to leave the West Coast to explore other parts of the world, doing both field work and working in climate reform and policy. “I want to help the planet as best as I can,” she says, “and I will see where it takes me!”
Welcome, Max!
