The Consulting Service located at SFU’s Big Data Hub is dedicated to provide expert advice and solutions to its clients, both inside and outside the university. Each day, you’ll interact with diverse clients—from data newbies to experts—to share your expertise, move projects forward, and deliver creative and effective solutions. Our goal is to exceed client expectations and support their analytic needs.

With strong connections to SFU's Big Data Hub, you’ll serve as a junior consultant and peer mentor to individuals and groups that want to better understand their data using big data methods.

What you’ll do as a Junior Big Data Consultant: ▪ Deliver excellent customer service by responding to client emails, requests, and questions. Regularly meet with clients to understand their needs both alone and with a lead consultant. Provide regular updates to clients (in-person, email, phone) and log information and tasks in the project management system.

▪ Assist other consultants with client projects. You’ll work directly with clients to help them with project design, data collection and cleaning, analysis, reporting, and reviewing results, and more.

▪ Synthesize and analyze information from various data sources (e.g. datasets, research literature, websites, policy briefs etc.).

▪ Assist in creating training materials for delivering workshops to internal and external clients.

▪ Collaborate with other consultants on client projects to deliver innovative solutions.

▪ Be an ambassador for SFU’s Big Data Hub by sharing your expertise with the team and peers.

Skills and Experience:

▪ Excellent customer service skills. Ability to establish and maintain positive working relationships.

▪ Excellent organization, problem-solving and analytical skills, with a high attention to detail.

▪ Excellent communication (written and verbal) skills, including presentation skills.

▪ Excellent collaboration skills who enjoys working on teams and sharing your expertise.

▪ Ability to multi-task and meet deadlines.

▪ Basic to intermediate knowledge of programming languages (e.g. Python, R, etc.), data management tools (e.g. Apache Spark, SQL etc.), and/or visualization tools (e.g. Tableau).

▪ Willingness and enthusiasm to learn data analytic skills (e.g. programming languages, data management tools, modern version control, visualization etc.).

▪ Experience extracting and cleaning data from different sources and preparing it for use.

▪ Ability to communicate technical concepts to non-technical users

▪ Qualitative and/or quantitative research experience is an asset

▪ Knowledge of statistical approaches is an asset.

Job Summary
