Joanna Tong

Director, Advancement, Faculty of Health Sciences

“Try not to become a man of success, but rather try to become a man of value.” - Albert Einstein

As Director of Advancement, Joanna provides support to donors and philanthropists who are looking to make a difference in the health of communities. She partners with individuals, businesses and alumni who believe in investing in research and education to advance health promotion and disease prevention efforts in Canada and around the world. To date, Joanna has worked with donors who have supported innovation in areas such as cancer therapeutics, HIV/AIDS vaccine development, early child development and mental health and addictions. She has also worked with donors who have supported students pursuing health sciences degrees and students completing practicums in developing countries. From initial conversations to delivering impact reports, Joanna harnesses each donor's passion at each stage of the process to make their experiences with SFU Health Sciences memorable.

Joanna has worked in Asia, the United Kingdom and North America, and enjoys meeting and connecting with people from all different backgrounds. She has 25 years of senior management experience in advancement, social enterprise, economic development and consulting. Prior to joining the SFU Faculty of Health Sciences, she has worked at the Alberta Children's Hospital Foundation in Calgary. She has also worked as a leadership coach and facilitator, an author and has spoken at business conferences in Paris, New York and England.

Joanna has a Master of Philosophy degree from the University of St. Andrews in Scotland, and a Master of Science from the Manchester Metropolitan University. She is a sophisticated fundraiser, a warm friendraiser, and an insightful relationship builder.
